Italian POWs with stone skills were used to build or repair water projects. My grandmother lived near one of these and we fraternized with these exotic people when I was ~ 8 years old. Many Italian POWs with masonry etc skills settled in the UK after WW2. In fact, in 1972, while on sabbatical from U. Penn, we rented an idyllic gameskeepers cottage (Hollowmarsh Cottage) from Lord and Lady Waldegrave in the Mendips in Somerset. That cottage was extensively refurbished by expat Italian stonemasons and was stunning.”
